We
believe that everyone has the right to achieve a balance between all the different roles life throws at us (e.g. parent,
child, co-worker, etc) and the pressures to conform.
We aim to
enable others to see their place in life in a clearer light through the use of performance.
Our goal is to provide a creative environment where these roles can be
addressed, challenged and explored safely. The added advantage of experiencing these different facets of the self in this
way is that there are no long lasting consequences. The clarity that this process has to offer will then give the individual
greater confidence in themselves and the many roles they play in their day to day lives.
Jude's use of Performance & Psychology
Performance and Psychology is used by a variety of practitioners and in a number of settings:
Firstly
it can be used to offer its participants the chance to reflect on those moments when a decision is made that affects every
subsequent one. In the past Applied Theatre has been successfully used with people experiencing socio-emotional difficulties,
in schools, prisons, retirement homes and on the street; in order to engage with issues through ‘Role Play’.
‘Role Play’, is classed by Jude as any meaningful act undertaken by an individual to quantify a facet
of the ‘Self’ within a fictional world in preparation for it to be transferred back into real life. When bad choices
start to feed off themselves, an individual can become locked into a pattern of behaviour that may bring him/her into conflict
with society or even the authorities.
Secondly
a Psycho-performactive Activity could be used to explore social relationships and allow participants to discover their ‘Role’
within life and the impact in may have on the ‘Self’. By understanding the ‘Role’ and how much control
or lack of control one may have over it’s make up can be an empowering experience that enables genuine ‘Self’
growth.
This ‘growth’ can also be true for a group of disenfranchised individuals that lack a core identity
within society. These issues can be address through drama, because the coming together of individuals in a drama activity/project
promotes a mediate group identity; it also provides a safe space where concepts of core identity can be positively explored.
